NPR is relying on unredacted internal documents from TikTok that were accidentally exposed during a lawsuit brought by the Kentucky attorney general.
The documents were part of a more than two-year investigation by 14 attorneys general into children's safety on the TikTok platform. The documents, which include internal communications, studies and internal TikTok reports, reveal that the company was aware of the app's negative effects on teenagers, particularly on mental health and addiction.
The documents were briefly accessible to the public after an error in the redaction process, allowing Kentucky Public Radio to reveal uncensored excerpts. NPR was then able to review the documents before a court ruling sealed the file again.
